Human Resource Development Activities

The NIOS organises regular orientation and training programmes for its full time and part time staff in addition to sponsoring staff members for training programmes in special areas conducted by other training organisations. The training areas include advanced distance education strategies, media production, student support services, computer applications, administrative aspects and examination processes.

The satellite-based teleconferencing is perceived by the NIOS as a potential system of providing training and communication support to human resource development for open schooling. Teleconferencing makes it possible to overcome constraints of number, location and simultaneity of training. It also takes into account decentralised quality training.

The training programmes are conducted through expert presentations supported by pre-recorded situations such as visual clippings, role-playing and discussions. The mode of discussion is through satellite-based and telephone-based one way video and two way audio conferencing.

The NIOS organised the following training programmes during 1997:

• To upgrade the skills of the academic staff members of the National Open School, a workshop on "Script Writing for Educational Television" with an aim was conducted by the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) in April'97. The workshop enabled the tutors to familiarise themselves with the tools and idioms of film making to be able to interact meaningfully and effectively with the producers.
• Training programme for 306 Co-ordinators of Study Centres through Teleconference from 26th October to 29th October'97. The teaching end was EMPC, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi and the learning ends were the ten Regional Centres of IGNOU.
• Computer Training: All officers and junior level staff members of the NIOS are being provided orientation in Computer Applications, keeping in mind the needs of the open learning system.
